What is the difference between UNIX hosting and Windows hosting?
11.25.08 (2:24 am)   [edit]
Just like Mac OS and Windows are different (but do the same things), Linux (and Unix) and Windows do the same things differently. There are certain online applications that will only run on Linux/Unix environments and others that will only run on Windows. ASP and ASP.NET, two programming languages (created by Microsoft) will only run on Windows computers. Deciding on which operating system to go with depends on your needs. If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP, MS Access, or VBScript, then Windows hosting would be better. Furthermore, if you are comfortable with IIS and do not have the time to understand how UNIX works, Windows hosting would again be a better choice. There are some things to remember. First of all, just because you use Windows at home does not mean you should use Windows hosting. The two are completely different, and having a Windows system at home will not affect your ability to communicate with a UNIX server. Secondly, Linux is much more common with web hosts due to its superior stability and because it is free. Since it is free, Linux hosting is usually cheaper than Windows. Just because it's free does not mean it's not as good - Linux is an excellent product too. What is Domain Parking?
11.25.08 (2:23 am)   [edit]
Domain parking is an extremely inexpensive way to secure a domain for later development, redirection of Web traffic, or re-sale. Domain registrants, or sellers, commonly offer domain parking free with domain registration, as there is virtually no cost involved with domain parking. A parked domain includes one simple page. If the site is intended for development, the page will indicate it is under construction or coming soon. Domain parking can be renewed annually, and there is no deadline as to when a site need be developed. You might find you don’t have time, or you might decide to let the domain expire at the end of the contract, typically one year. In this case, the only investment lost is a few dollars. If you decide to develop your domain, you will need to pay for hosting services at that point. The right hosting service will provide enough space for your website and any special scripts or services you require. Once the domain is being hosted, it is no longer parked. If you already have a successful site, another use of domain parking is to secure addresses similar to your main website and redirect traffic there - an inexpensive way to protect your website. For example, wiseGEEK.net redirects traffic to the proper site, wiseGEEK.com. The first domain is parked. The parked domain need not reside on the same host server as the main website. Some people use domain parking for the sole purpose of ‘re-selling’ the address - transferring ownership to a buyer for a fee. This occurred more in the early days of the Internet, when major companies had yet to arrive and were willing to pay a high price for their trademark names. Laws were eventually enacted to protect trademarks, but a parked page can still advertise the sale of a domain. If interested in domain parking, keep in mind a few considerations. Most domain registrants offer hosting services, but you may or may not want the domain seller to host the domain once it is no longer parked. Be sure to check that the domain seller does not retain any rights to the domain. The buyer should have the power to control the domain’s registration information, and most importantly, the ability to transfer the domain to an independent hosting service when and if desired. Check to see whether a fee is associated with transferring the domain. Domain registration once cost over 60 US Dollars (USD) per year, but today a domain can be had for as little as 5.99 USD annually or less. Hence, domain parking is an attractive proposition. What can go wrong with Web hosting
11.25.08 (2:22 am)   [edit]
Too much downtime Problems happen, and even when they don’t, server maintenance results in a minimal amount of downtime. A dependable Web host not only maintains servers well, but also monitors the servers and fixes problems immediately. With the type of Web host you want to avoid, however, your site may be down for days. Features that don’t work When your email doesn’t work, your business shuts down. Problems with databases and other features can also slow down or stop your business. Most Web hosts understand this, but some don’t place a high priority on keeping not only your site online but everything working as well. Poor support Dependable Web hosts answer tech support questions within hours. Other Web hosts, however, have been known to take days. And when those responses come, sometimes they’re canned responses that don’t address the issue. Poor communication Support people with good communication skills help keep problems from becoming bigger problems. Being told, “Everything looks fine here, so the problem is solved,” leads to frustration. So is having your site shut down because it used too many resources rather than the Web host contacting you about the problem first. Billing problems Even after you cancel your account, problems may continue. Some less-than-dependable Web hosts don’t honor their refund policy. Others don’t stop automatic billing after the account is cancelled. What to watch out for When you see the following at Web host websites, consider them red flags to warn you of possible problems. Unsustainable pricing If the pricing looks too good to be true, it probably is. Is it enough to pay for server maintenance and tech support? You get what you pay for. Unlimited bandwidth Nothing is really unlimited. If you sign up for an account offering unlimited bandwidth and then use a lot of bandwidth, expect to have the plug pulled on your site. The Web host may find another explanation for discontinuing your account, but “unlimited” typically means “as long as you don’t use a lot.” An unprofessional-looking website Consider how much effort the Web host put into providing a usable website with informative content. Does it give you confidence in the Web host, or is it full of unsubstantiated statements and grammar and spelling mistakes? A Web host doesn’t need to be a spelling expert, of course. But if the company hasn’t put much effort into telling you about their services, will they be conscientious about meeting clients’ needs? How to research Web hosts Finding Web hosts is easy enough. Search engines can take you to the websites of thousands of Web hosts. But after you’ve narrowed down your list by features and price, how do you find out which Web hosts are dependable? Read Web host package details and TOS If the Web hosting packages offer huge amounts of disk space and bandwidth for very low prices, consider yourself warned. Don’t expect the company to have enough money for maintenance and support. If you want to be sure that you can get a refund if you want one, check what the Terms of Service (TOS) says about refunds. Read the Web host forum What is the ambience in the forum? Are clients’ questions answered satisfactorily? Don’t be concerned if you see problems; instead, be concerned if you don’t see any problems. Some Web hosts remove posts that don’t show their company in a positive light. If posts about problems remain in the forum, you can observe how the host handles problems. What are PHP, ASP, Perl, etc?
11.25.08 (2:22 am)   [edit]
These are all programming languages which are referred to by their acronyms. PHP - PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor ASP - Active Server Pages Perl - not an acronym Each programming language has its own benefits and uses. Programming is used online to create dynamic and interactive websites. Different software packages require different programming languages - make sure your web host supports the programming languages you need before buying any. I am using too much bandwidth! Is there anyway for me to make it less?
11.25.08 (2:20 am)   [edit]
In most cases, yes. You should first try to optimize the graphics on your website. Many GIFs look just as good with fewer colors, and many JPEGs look just as good with a higher compression level. Use a graphic editor like adobe photoshop or Corel Draw, etc etc to compress your image. You should also analyze the HTML of your site. Make sure you use relative paths, so that images are not downloaded more than one time. Remove any extra spacing and when linking to other pages, use relative paths and not absolute links. Best of all, optimizing your page like this makes the user experience better as your site will load faster for them! How do I track how many hits my website gets?
11.25.08 (2:19 am)   [edit]
There are a few things that need to be cleared in terms of terminology: • Hits - this simply refers to the number of 'elements' loaded on your site. If one page has five images in it, viewing that page once adds 6 hits (one page + five images). • Impressions - the number of times all the pages on your site are seen (also simply called pageviews). Impressions are sometimes referred to as 'hits' which can cause confusion. • Uniques - the number of people that visited your site. So to clarify, if I visit your website, look at two pages, and each page has 5 images on it, then your stats increase by one unique, two page views, and 12 hits. Tracking on your site can be either done server-side or remotely. With server-side statistics, log files are used to generate visitor information. This is usually much more accurate than remotely hosted solutions. In such cases, you usually have to add some javascript to your site. This javascript is then used to track visitor data. If your host provides it (and many do), server-side statistics are a good solution. Otherwise, companies like Site Meter can be used to remotely track your visitors. You can also view the statistics for your web site via cPanel. Why don't I just go with the cheapest hosting?
11.25.08 (2:19 am)   [edit]
A host has to make a profit to continue operating. Some hosts do not properly understand the market, and may be pricing themselves too cheap. Everyone today is looking for cheap web hosting. At the same time you see hosting providers giving the world for $5. So why not go with the cheapest hosting provider offering the most resources? 1. How much does it cost? Web hosting providers also have to pay for bandwidth and equipment. Servers aren't cheap, ranging from $1,000 all the way to $20,000 for the cream of the crop. Even those $20,000 have a space limit, especially since hard drives are tough to find over 1TB in size. Bandwidth isn't free as well, and a single server can only put out about 30,000GB per month on a standard 100 mbit network connection. So lets say a host sells 100GB of disk space and 1000GB of bandwidth on each hosting plan. Theoretically the host should only offer 30 plans on a single server, and at $5 a piece it roughly comes out to $150/mo. So how can a host cover server and bandwidth costs and keep staff available 24/7 for support? 2. The Magic of Overselling To be able to afford the costs and still make a profit hosts start overselling. Overselling is basically selling more than what you can provide. In this case instead of putting 30 customers on a server, they put 300 customers. This is done based on the assumption that no user will use all of their allotted space and bandwidth. Does it work? Absolutely, even the electric company does it, based on the assumption that everyone won't turn all their electronics on at once. This can only be taken to a certain extent before it starts becoming a problem, and the server starts getting overloaded. So what happens if everyone actually used all their bandwidth and disk space? Nothing, because the Terms of Service and Acceptable Usage Policy don't allow it. If you read these two pieces you will find that every host has a clause that mentions CPU and Memory Usage. You will most likely hit these limits far before you hit the space and bandwidth limits. 3. Get what you for! Unfortunately when it comes to web hosting you truly get what you pay for. By throwing in an extra few dollars a month you will receive a higher quality hosting experience. Your sites will load faster, and essentially you'll have happy browsers. This will also allow the host to purchase more expensive, and faster hardware, and hire knowledgable professionals. It all comes back to you. What is MySQL, MS SQL, etc?
11.25.08 (2:17 am)   [edit]
MySQL, and MS SQL are examples of databases. When working with data that require manipulation, a database makes accessing and manipulating the data easier. Normally web searches uses a database. When you search, search engine website ask the database to give back the information that meet certain requirements. What exactly is space and bandwidth/data transfer?
11.25.08 (2:16 am)   [edit]
Disk space is the maximum size of your website. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on your web host's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but the extra images, scripts, and databases take up large amounts of disk space. Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send in a single month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes. What are subdomains?
11.25.08 (2:15 am)   [edit]
Subdomains are an extension of a main domain. For example, Yahoo! can be accessed at www.yahoo.com. Yahoo! Sports can be accessed at sports.yahoo.com. In this case, sports is the subdomain. Most of the time people only create records (www, mail, ftp, etc.). This is technically not a subdomain. A subdomain is when you delegate a part / section of your domain to different name servers. "example.com" is a subdomain of "com". "com" uses uses one set of name severs for delegation (the com top level doamin name servers) and "example.com" uses different name servers (DNS Made Easy for instance). Here is what happens when you notify your registrar to use DNS Made Easy name server: Inside the "com" zone new NS records will be added / changed for "example.com" that will point the domain to the DNS Made Easy name servers. That is how domains are delegated to authoritative name servers (all people have to do though is notify their registrar). So if you wanted a subdomain for "example.com" (such as "us.example.com" or "europe.example.com") then you would create NS records to delegate that part of your domain to different name servers making a subdomain. Then those name server would create a record (A or CNAME records) called "www" so the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) would be "www.us.example.com". I have a fast internet connection (DSL/cable) - can I just host my own site?
11.25.08 (2:13 am)   [edit]
You could, but it's alot of work..First of all, most Internet Service Providers will not let you use your internet connection for web hosting, doing so will result in termination of your account. Second of all, it can be a royal pain to keep things running smoothly; Making sure your network is secure so that no one can hack into it, setting up the actual server operating system, setting up and maintaining an email server etc. Finally, think of the performance. Most good web hosts use powerful servers with abundant amounts memory and high performance hard drives. Furthermore, they have multiple internet connections at speeds far higher than what residential DSL or cable services can provide. DSL/cable is fast for single or few users (such as yourself and your family). But when dozens try using that connection, it is simply inadequate. There is a reason why DSL at 5mbit can be upto 100x cheaper than an industrial-strength connection also at 5mbit. Remember many ISPs providing DSL/cable service also have clauses in your contract that forbid you from hosting a website on their connection. How do I upload my site?
11.25.08 (2:11 am)   [edit]
There are 2 ways you can do this: Online File Manager Normally all hosting packages come with an Online File Manager which can be accessed via Control Panel. This enables you to upload files using just your web browser meaning you can upload web pages, images and scripts from any internet enabled PC anywhere! FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Software There are many excellent FTP packages available, some of them free, that enable you to connect to your web space and upload your files almost as if you were just copying files to another disk on your PC. Here are some examples: PC 1. CoffeCup Direct FTP 2. Bulletproof FTP Mac 1. Transmit 2. Fetch If you're using an FTP program you will need to enter the following information in order to connect to your web space: FTP Host: "www.yourdomain.com" Username: sent to you after signup Password: sent to you after signup Host Directory: "/httpdocs" for normal web pages "/httpsdocs" for secure pages (if you have ordered SSL) Read Web host reviews (www.makedotsimple.com) Lot of sites provide quite extensive reviews of web hosting sites In fact we are in process of creating one of those web sites for community which is under development and will be launched soon www.makedotsimple.com Here is the URL http://www.makedotsimple.com/... How do I register a domain name?
11.25.08 (2:09 am)   [edit]
Setting up a Web site with your own domain name (www.me.com) is a straightforward process, though finding a name you like may prove difficult. Registration usually gives you exclusive use of a domain name for two years. Instructions Difficulty: Easy Things You'll Need Credit Cards Internet Access Computers Steps to Do 1. Go to an official Internet registrar online. See the More Resources section below for a good suggestion on where to start. 2. Enter the name or phrase of the domain name you would like to register. Follow the rules regarding name length and format. 3. Search for the name. 4. If the name is already taken, enter a new name and search again until you find one that is still available. If you tried .com as a suffix, try .org or .net instead. 5. Register the domain name. 6. Pay the filing fee online or through the mail, following the instructions on the Web site. Tips & Warnings 1. Have a list of possible names ready when you visit the site. 2. The more unusual the name, the more likely it will be available. Most common or well-known corporate names are taken. 3. If the domain name is already taken and you desperately want it, you may contact the owner and offer to buy it. Domain registration once cost over 60 US Dollars (USD) per year, but today a domain can be had for as little as 5.99 USD annually or less. Hence, domain parking is an attractive proposition. What exactly is space and bandwidth/data transfer?
10.14.08 (7:44 am)   [edit]
What exactly is space and bandwidth/data transfer? Disk space is the maximum size of your website. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on your web host's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but the extra images, scripts, and databases take up large amounts of disk space. Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send in a single month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes. What can go wrong with Web hosting
10.14.08 (7:43 am)   [edit]
What can go wrong with Web hosting Too much downtime Problems happen, and even when they don’t, server maintenance results in a minimal amount of downtime. What are subdomains?
10.14.08 (7:43 am)   [edit]
What are subdomains? What are PHP, ASP, Perl, etc?
10.14.08 (7:42 am)   [edit]
What are PHP, ASP, Perl, etc? These are all programming languages which are referred to by their acronyms. PHP - PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor ASP - Active Server Pages Perl - not an acronym Each programming language has its own benefits and uses. Programming is used online to create dynamic and interactive websites. Different software packages require different programming languages - make sure your web host supports the programming languages you need before buying any. I have a fast internet connection (DSL/cable) - can I just host my own site?
10.14.08 (7:41 am)   [edit]
I have a fast internet connection (DSL/cable) - can I just host my own site? I am using too much bandwidth! Is there anyway for me to make it less?
10.14.08 (7:40 am)   [edit]
I am using too much bandwidth! Is there anyway for me to make it less? In most cases, yes. You should first try to optimize the graphics on your website. Many GIFs look just as good with fewer colors, and many JPEGs look just as good with a higher compression level. Use a graphic editor like adobe photoshop or Corel Draw, etc etc to compress your image. You should also analyze the HTML of your site. Make sure you use relative paths, so that images are not downloaded more than one time. Remove any extra spacing and when linking to other pages, use relative paths and not absolute links. Best of all, optimizing your page like this makes the user experience better as your site will load faster for them! How do I upload my site?
10.14.08 (7:40 am)   [edit]
How do I upload my site?
